Bloodlines, Petronio Residency Center, New Work
In 2019, Stephen Petronio Company enters its 36th year, no small accomplishment. In recent years, we have transformed the Company’s mission with three core ideas: engage with masters of the past who have deeply inspired Petronio, support the creation of Stephen’s new dances in the present, and invest in the young artists of the future. This undertaking is significant, and we humbly ask for your support in our endeavors.
BLOODLINES – the past
A legacy initiative that brings to life works from the post-modern generation of choreographers who have influenced Petronio, many of which have not been seen since their original creation. To date, SPC has restaged 11 works by Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, Steve Paxton, Anna Halprin, and Rudy Perez. The juxtaposition of Bloodlines repertory alongside Petronio’s works offers audiences an experiential insight into the evolution of this strand of creativity in American choreography. This coming season, we will look towards a future generation of artists and heirs to the Bloodlines lineage by commissioning new work from a young artist who will share the stage with SPC for our New York Season this spring.
STEPHEN PETRONIO COMPANY– the present
Founded in 1984, SPC is a national and international touring company that has reached audiences in over 40 countries, performing original works by Stephen Petronio as well as Bloodlines repertory. New music, visual art, and fashion collide in his dances, producing powerfully modern landscapes for the senses. The Company also houses an education program, focused on masterclasses and community outreach.
PETRONIO RESIDENCY CENTER – the future
In 2016, SPC established PRC, a haven for research and development for the next generation of dance makers, nestled within a 175-acre haven in the Catskill Mountains. The center provides dedicated rehearsal space and resources to choreographers and their collaborators to develop new work in an environment unfettered by market constraints and away from the daily pressures of urban life. Since then, PRC has established an education program upstate, inviting the local community into our home for workshops and classes.
